When is the best time?
- Peak 1: 15 May – 15 Jul — Mid May to mid July: bears at the hides (mating season, long evenings)
- Peak 2: 15 Aug – 15 Oct — Mid August to mid October: wolf pack howling with pups at rendezvous sites
Active from 15 Apr to 31 Oct (April to October) in a typical year.
Time of day
Hide sessions run from about 18:00 to 22:00; bears arrive mostly in the last hour of light and the first hour of dusk. Wolf howling is most frequent in the first 2–3 h after full dark.
- Hide session: 18:00 → 1 h after last light
- Howling: last light → 3 h after last light
What will you hear?
Bear footfalls, huffs and jaw-popping close to a hide; wolf packs howling across karst dolines in late summer; dormice and Ural owls at night; the Lika plateau is one of the quietest places in southern Europe.
Binoculars?
Binoculars helpful. Bears at 20–50 m from a hide in the last light; binoculars help in the gloom. Howls need nothing.
Where to go
- Risnjak National Park and Gorski kotar hides (Delnice–Mrkopalj) — Local hunting associations run photographic hides; national park itself has no baiting. Map
- Northern Velebit – Štirovača — Strict forest reserve at the southern end of the park; wolf pack territory. Map
- Velebit Nature Park – Kuterevo bear refuge — Orphan bear sanctuary (captive) — not wild, but a place to learn bear vocalisation and get local contacts. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Bear hides are run by the hunting associations of Gorski kotar (ask exactly what you are booking — many are baited hunting hides) and there is no independent bear walking. Free and legal: drop-rigs set before dusk along public forest roads (Štirovača, Risnjak trails) and wolf howling from the Lika forest roads at night.
Cost: Hide sessions through local hunting grounds (check current prices).
Free or no-guide alternative: Passive and free: Štirovača forest road in Northern Velebit (park ticket in season) or Risnjak's trails by day, with recorders left on the road edge overnight for wolves, bears and owls.
Field-recording notes
Bear watching in Croatia is organised through hunting grounds (bears are game with a quota; the hunting season is Oct–Dec and Mar–May) — hides are baited and often used for hunting too, so ask exactly what you are booking. Wolves are strictly protected. No independent night walking in bear forest; use drop-rigs set before dusk along forest roads and collect after dawn. Karst limestone amplifies and carries: a doline rim is a natural parabola. Almost no anthropogenic noise beyond the A1 motorway corridor (which crosses Velebit through tunnels — audible only near Sveti Rok).
