Question 1

What is Sounding Wild?

Accepted Answer

Sounding Wild is a creative studio that gathers sound from wetland dawns, rainforest nights and tidal flats. We shape what we receive into listening spaces, films and music that bring you into relationship with the living world.

Question 2

Who founded Sounding Wild?

Accepted Answer

Axel Drioli, a wildlife sound recordist and musician, founded Sounding Wild in 2018. Today a team of listeners, sound designers, storytellers and field leaders across Europe and Africa makes the work, with the living world as our first collaborator.

Question 3

What does Sounding Wild create?

Accepted Answer

Sounding Wild creates immersive listening experiences for cultural spaces, sound for artists and performers, and field journeys for brands. Each piece starts the same way: sitting still at the edge of a marsh or a forest, listening until the place begins to speak.

Question 4

What is Across Continents?

Accepted Answer

Across Continents is Sounding Wild's long journey alongside the birds that migrate between Europe and Africa. We travel overland, and every month we stop where the birds stop, to listen with local conservation partners, then bring the films and music we make back to each community first.

Question 5

Which countries has Across Continents visited?

Accepted Answer

Across Continents has travelled through 18 countries since 2022: from the Wadden Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar, down Mauritania's shores, through Sierra Leone's forests and the Congo basin, to Angola's desert coast. Southern Africa comes next, in 2027.

Question 6

Who does Sounding Wild work with?

Accepted Answer

Sounding Wild works alongside the people who know each place best: BirdLife International and its partners, such as GREPOM in Morocco, NCD in Senegal and the Ghana Wildlife Society, and the local communities and guides who host us. Soundly, ZEISS and the RSPB support the journey.

Question 7

How does Sounding Wild gather its sounds?

Accepted Answer

Sounding Wild gathers sound slowly, with permission and patience. We leave microphones out through the night, wait for the dawn chorus, and let the living world come to us on its own terms. Each sound we share is one the place offered us.

Question 8

What is it like to experience a Sounding Wild installation?

Accepted Answer

A Sounding Wild installation puts you inside a place. Close your eyes: birds pass overhead, water moves at your feet, the forest opens around you. Across Continents has shared a listening experience in every one of the 18 countries it has travelled through.

Question 9

Who has listened with Across Continents?

Accepted Answer

More than 2,000 people have listened with Across Continents in Europe and Africa since 2022. They include schoolchildren, farmers, hunters, elders, musicians and city crowds, and many of them heard the migratory birds of their own land for the first time.

Question 10

Does Sounding Wild make music?

Accepted Answer

Sounding Wild makes music with the living world itself. Our label, Sounding Wild Records, releases tracks where wild places and the lives within them sing lead, and Music Across Continents carries that music into villages and cities along the route, shaped by the rhythms of each community.

Question 11

Can brands work with Sounding Wild?

Accepted Answer

Brands can travel into the field with Sounding Wild. We take partners out into the wild, to the places and wildlife their story belongs to, and come home with original films and sound stories their audiences can feel.

Question 12

Where is Sounding Wild based?

Accepted Answer

Sounding Wild is based in the United Kingdom and listens wherever the living world calls. Most of our listening happens along the migration route that links Europe with West and Central Africa, and from 2027, Southern Africa.

Question 13

How do I contact Sounding Wild?

Accepted Answer
