When is the best time?
- Peak 1: 15 Aug – 15 Oct — Mid August to mid October: wolf pack chorus with pups, plus Ural owl autumn courtship
- Peak 2: 1 Feb – 31 Mar — February–March: Ural owl main courtship, Tengmalm's owl
Active from 1 Aug to 31 Mar (August to March) in a typical year.
Time of day
Full night, but the first 2 h after dark and the hour before dawn carry most howling; Ural owls call from dusk, most in the first 3 h of darkness. Drop-rigs on a 6–8 h timer from dusk cover it.
- Evening howling and owls: last light → 3 h after last light
- Pre-dawn howling: 90 min before first light → first light
What will you hear?
Pack howls with high pup yips from rendezvous sites, carrying several km across karst dolines; Ural owl's deep barking 'wuh-wuh-wuho' and female's hoarse calls; Tengmalm's owl in late winter; red deer in the same windows from mid September.
Binoculars?
No binoculars needed. Full dark on forest roads; howls and owl calls are the event. Red torch only.
Where to go
- Kočevski Rog plateau (Baza 20 area, Rog road) — Forest roads on the plateau; wolf howling surveys by the Slovenian Forest Service and SloWolf use this area. Dolines act as natural amphitheatres. Map
- Krokar virgin forest / Borovec, Kolpa valley — UNESCO primeval beech forest — no off-trail access, but the ridge road above gives long sightlines and a very low noise floor. Map
- Snežnik plateau (Mašun–Sviščaki road) — Second core wolf area; Ural owl very common in the fir-beech forest. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Park at a forest-road gate (Rog road above Kočevske Poljane, the Mašun–Sviščaki road, the Borovec ridge road) and walk in on foot — gated forest roads are open to walkers at all hours. Put out drop-rigs at dusk on doline rims and collect after dawn. No imitated howls. Check with the Kočevje forest office about logging and hunting days.
Cost: Free.
Field-recording notes
Howling surveys use imitated howls — do not. Wolves are strictly protected in Slovenia and provoked howling near rendezvous sites is disturbance; put out long unattended drop-rigs (a stereo pair on a 6–8 h timer) at 2–3 doline rims and let the pack find its own voice. Forest roads are gated; you can walk them but check with the Kočevje forest office about logging and the autumn hunting season (red deer hunting from mid August, bear cull quotas in autumn). No traffic at night at all — your noise floor is dormice and wind in beech canopy. Ural owls are aggressive near nests in spring: keep distance, no playback.
