When is the best time?

Peak: 15 Apr – 15 May. Mid April to mid May

Active from 20 Mar to 31 May (March to May) in a typical year.

Time of day

Nocmig from dusk all night; after a fall, the island scrub is loudest from first light to mid morning as arrivals feed and sing.

What will you hear?

Island scrub full of freshly arrived, singing migrants after 'falls', with night flight calls overhead.

Binoculars?

Binoculars helpful. Fresh arrivals sing in low island scrub; binoculars for hoopoes, orioles and shrikes.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Ferries from Formia to Ventotene, Naples to Capri, Trapani to Marettimo, Porto Empedocle to Lampedusa; then walk the island paths — Ventotene's centre is car-free. Villa San Michele (Capri) charges entry but the ringing station work is visible from the gardens.

Cost: Free on foot; ferry fares apply (check current prices); Villa San Michele €12 adult / €8 youth-student, under-12 free (site undated).

Field-recording notes

Nocmig from island rooftops is very productive. Weather-dependent 'fall' days are unpredictable — check live reports on ornitho.it. Ventotene has no cars in the centre.
