Where to go
- Pod Gredom ornithological reserve (near Metković) — Reeds and open water below the limestone ridge; the classic site; viewed from the road and dyke. Map
- Prud and Orepak reserves (Kuti lake) — Lake Kuti and surrounding marsh; boat access from local guides in the traditional 'trupa' boats. Map
- Baćina lakes, Ploče — Karst lakes north of the delta; wintering ducks and coot, herons; quiet roads. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Pod Gredom: the public road from Metković and the dyke along the reserve. Kuti: local 'trupa' boatmen take you out (paid, ask in Vid or Prud). Baćina lakes: the lakeside road from Ploče. All roadside and dyke access is free; keep to no-hunting reserve edges in autumn.
Cost: Free; local boat trips optional (check current prices).
Field-recording notes
The delta's chronic problem is hunting: waterfowl hunting runs autumn–winter and poaching (including illegal spring shooting and bird liming) is documented by BIOM — expect gunfire on autumn mornings and be careful where you set gear; the ornithological reserves themselves are no-hunting. The A1 motorway and the Ploče port are audible at the northern edge; the Metković–Opuzen road is busy. Mandarin plantations mean tractors and irrigation pumps from April. Bora blows down the valley; sirocco brings still, humid mornings that are ideal. The southern lagoons near Ušće are quietest by kayak.
