When is the best time?
Peak: 1 Sep – 15 Oct. Early September to mid October; honey buzzards late Aug–early Sept, sparrowhawks and buzzards late Sept–early Oct
Active from 1 Aug to 20 Nov (August to November) in a typical year.
Time of day
Be at Nabben at first light: passerines pour over the point from dawn and the station's counts start 30 min before sunrise. Raptors wait for thermals and move from mid-morning, best watched from Ljungen heath from about 09:00 to early afternoon. South-westerly winds push everything onto the peninsula.
- Passerine dawn flight (Nabben): 30 min before sunrise → 3 h after sunrise
- Raptor thermals (Ljungen): 09:00 → 14:00
What will you hear?
A continuous stream of flight calls at dawn — chaffinch, brambling, meadow pipit, yellow wagtail, siskin — thousands of birds an hour on a big day; cranes bugling high overhead in late Sept–Oct; the sea on both sides of the point.
Binoculars?
Telescope recommended. Raptors spiral up high over the heath and sea ducks pass far out; binoculars minimum, a scope earns its carry. The passerine rush at Nabben is at head height and audible.
Where to go
- Nabben (south-west tip, end of the golf course) — Classic dawn point with a small hide; crowded on big days. Tiny public car park (8 cars) by the golf club entrance — do not use the golf club's own lot. Måkläppen beyond is closed 1 Feb–31 Oct. Map
- Skanörs ljung (Ljungen heath), south-west corner — Best raptor spot on the peninsula once thermals build; move with the wind to stay under the stream. Map
- Falsterbo lighthouse (Falsterbo fyr) — bird observatory — Falsterbo Fågelstation ringing site and the start point for guided walks; station lodging on Sjögatan. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Drive or take the bus from Malmö to Falsterbo; park in the small public lot by the golf club entrance (or at Flommen, 2 km walk) and walk the track to Nabben before dawn. Later in the morning drive or cycle to the south-west corner of Skanörs ljung for raptors. Free, open at all hours.
Cost: Free; parking free but very limited.
Who runs access
- Falsterbo Fågelstation – guided tours from the lighthouse (research project) — Guiding always starts at Falsterbo Fyr; free walk-in sessions and bookable tours in autumn.
Field-recording notes
Nabben at dawn is the sound: thousands of flight calls streaming low over the point with the Öresund on three sides — stand slightly back from the crowd of birders (chatter and camera shutters are the main noise). Golf course sprinklers and early golfers from mid-morning; Malmö is 25 km away and the peninsula is quiet at night. Wind is near-constant and south-westerlies are exactly what brings the birds, so plan for heavy wind protection. Måkläppen reserve is off-limits Feb–Oct and the station asks people to stay out even in winter (seals). No playback needed — the birds come to you.
