When is the best time?

Peak: 20 Sep – 25 Oct. 20 September to 25 October; ringing stations operate 15 July–15 November

Active from 15 Aug to 15 Nov (August to November) in a typical year.

Time of day

Nocturnal flight calls from 21:00 to 06:00 on nights with light easterlies; visible migration from first light for about 3 h; seabirds past the lighthouse best in the morning in a westerly.

What will you hear?

Dawn flight calls of thousands of thrushes, pipits and finches leaving the coast, waders on the Lista beaches, skuas and gannets passing the lighthouse in a westerly gale; at night, redwing and song thrush calls overhead.

Binoculars?

Telescope recommended. Nocmig is ears only; dawn vis-mig and the seabirds past Lista lighthouse are scope work, binoculars minimum.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Lista: park at the lighthouse (free), bird station and visitor centre on site; the beaches and headland are public. Jomfruland: ferry from Kragerø; Utsira: ferry from Haugesund — both car-free and free to walk. Mølen: car park at the beach. Keep out of net lanes.

Cost: Free; island ferries (check current prices).

Field-recording notes

Lista is farmland and coast: tractors, the Farsund road and a wind farm inland, but the lighthouse point at dawn is fine. Nocturnal flight-call recording on Jomfruland and Utsira is exceptional (no traffic, water on all sides): a high-gain omni pair facing up, run 21:00–06:00 on nights with light easterlies and cloud. Ringing gardens and net lanes are off-limits; the stations welcome visitors and post daily counts. Autumn Atlantic weather is the constraint — expect gales; seabird passage is best in a strong westerly from the lighthouse lee.
