When is the best time?
Peak: 1 Oct – 31 Oct. October
Active from 1 Sep to 15 Nov (September to November) in a typical year.
Time of day
Nocmig from dusk all night, densest 2 h after dark to 03:00; after a fall the fields are loudest from first light to mid morning; seabird passage off the headlands is best in the first 3 h after sunrise.
- Nocturnal migration: last light → first light
- Dawn falls and seawatch: 30 min before sunrise → 3 h after sunrise
What will you hear?
Redwing and song thrush flight calls all night over the lighthouses, dawn passerine falls in the stone-walled fields, and shearwaters and gannets streaming past the headlands in a westerly.
Binoculars?
Telescope recommended. Nocmig is ears only; dawn falls need binoculars, and seabird passage off Pern is scope work.
Where to go
- Ouessant (Lampaul / Pointe de Pern) — France's only permanent island bird observatory (CEMO); the Créac'h lighthouse attracts nocturnal migrants on murky nights. Map
- Île de Sein — Tiny, car-free, with the same fall potential and less birder traffic. Map
- Cap Gris-Nez, Pas-de-Calais — Mainland alternative for seabird and passerine passage over the Channel; ferries and the A16. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Ferry with Penn ar Bed from Brest or Le Conquet (Ouessant) and Audierne (Sein); bikes for hire at Lampaul; the whole island is public paths and lanes, free at all hours. Book accommodation months ahead for October. Cap Gris-Nez: free mainland headland with a car park.
Cost: Free on the islands; Penn ar Bed ferry fares apply (check current prices).
Field-recording notes
Ouessant has almost no cars and no through traffic — one of the cleanest nocmig sites in France, though the foghorn and the lighthouse machinery are near the Créac'h end. Book accommodation months ahead for October. Wind is the constant; the low stone walls give useful shelter.
