When is the best time?
Peak: 1 May – 25 May. May, especially 5–25 May on south-easterly winds (Skagen Fuglefestival in mid May)
Active from 15 Mar to 10 Jun (March to June) in a typical year.
Time of day
Passerines and the beach from first light for 3 h (before the tourist buses at 10:00); raptors once thermals build, from 09:00 to mid afternoon; nightjars in the plantations at dusk.
- Dawn passerines: 30 min before sunrise → 3 h after sunrise
- Raptor passage: 09:00 → 15:00
- Dusk nightjars: 20 min after sunset → 1 h after last light
What will you hear?
Raptors are quiet: the recording is the Grenen dawn — the two seas meeting, diver and scoter flocks calling offshore, tree pipits and yellow wagtails overhead by the thousand, nightjar and cuckoo in the plantations; kites mewing over Flagbakken.
Binoculars?
Telescope recommended. Raptors gain height over Flagbakken and pass high; binoculars essential, a scope for eagles and the offshore divers.
Where to go
- Grenen (the spit) — Where Skagerrak meets Kattegat; seabirds and passerines at dawn; tourist buses from 10:00. Map
- Skagen Fuglestation, Det Grå Fyr (Grey Lighthouse) — DOF's bird station and visitor centre; ringing and daily counts; the roof is the raptor watchpoint. Map
- Flagbakken / Nordstrand — Inland heath and dune rise where raptors gain height; birders' main raptor point. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Grenen: park at the Grenen car park (paid in season) and walk the 2 km to the tip at first light; Flagbakken and Nordstrand by road and dune paths; the Grey Lighthouse bird station roof is the raptor watchpoint (visitor centre entry optional). Train to Skagen, then bike.
Cost: Free; Grenen car park charge in season (check current prices); Det Grå Fyr visitor centre DKK 95 adult (2026).
Field-recording notes
Skagen is a resort town: mid May is still quiet before 08:00 but Grenen's car park fills by mid-morning and the 'Sandormen' tractor runs to the tip all day. The dune plantations south of town (Skagen Klitplantage) have nightjars at dusk and almost no traffic. Wind is the constant; Grenen is a spit with no lee, so passerine flight calls at dawn need a low rig in the dune grass. Ringing and net lanes are closed; the station welcomes visitors. Reserve rules: no dogs off leads, stay off the tip's seal haul-out area (seals rest on Grenen).
