Where to go
- Klouto (Kloto) – Missahoé forest reserve — Guided walks from the village above Kpalimé; local guides specialise in butterflies and can do dawn birding. Map
- Mount Agou – Togo's highest point — Farmed slopes with forest patches; the summit road gives a sunrise over the Kloto hills. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Bush taxi from Lomé to Kpalimé, then taxi-moto up to Klouto; the forest tracks are walkable alone at dawn, though a local guide is customary for the classified forest and useful for the best patches.
Cost: Free on the public tracks; guide a few thousand CFA per half day, check current prices.
Free or no-guide alternative: The Mount Agou summit road and the Klouto village tracks are public and free at dawn.
Field-recording notes
Community forest with no permits beyond a guide fee; be clear with the guide that you want silence and early starts rather than the butterfly circuit. Everything here is close to farms and villages, so the clean windows are short and early. The rains (Apr–Jul) bring an evening frog chorus along the streams that is easy to reach from the guesthouses.
