When is the best time?
- Peak 1: 1 Mar – 15 May — Spring: northbound birds arrive over the Rock in westerlies
- Peak 2: 25 Aug – 10 Sep — Autumn: honey buzzard and black kite peak
Active from 15 Feb to 31 Oct (February to October) in a typical year.
Time of day
Raptors cross once thermals build, roughly 10:00–16:00; the GONHS watch points on the Upper Rock are manned in westerly winds. Seabirds pass Europa Point from first light, best in the first 2 h and in July–August. Storks come through early and late in the day.
- Raptor crossing: 10:00 → 16:00
- Seawatch, Europa Point: sunrise → 2 h after sunrise
What will you hear?
A sight more than a sound: kettles of honey buzzards sliding off the Rock towards Africa, black kites in lines, storks clattering overhead in spring; the soundscape is the Levanter wind, the foghorn at Europa Point, yellow-legged gulls and the port. Barbary partridge calls at dawn on the Upper Rock.
Binoculars?
Telescope recommended. In a westerly the birds come in at eye level over the Upper Rock — binoculars enough; on other days they are high and a scope earns its weight. Europa Point seabirds need a scope.
Where to go
- Jews' Gate – Strait of Gibraltar Bird Observatory (GONHS) — Ringing station and watch point at the southern entrance to the Upper Rock reserve; raptor counts since 1987 from set points on the Upper Rock. Inside the reserve (ticket). Map
- Europa Point — The southern tip: seabird passage, Cory's and Balearic shearwaters, skuas, terns; free, open at all hours. Map
- Upper Rock ridge (Mediterranean Steps / O'Hara's Battery) — Highest watch points when birds come in over the town in westerlies. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Europa Point: bus 2 from the town centre or walk along Europa Road; free, no gates. Upper Rock Nature Reserve: walk up Engineer Road/Queen's Road to the Jews' Gate entrance (pedestrian ticket, 09:00–18:15 winter, 09:30–19:15 summer, 2026) or the Mediterranean Steps from Jews' Gate; the GONHS observatory is just inside the gate. GONHS runs public raptor watches and EuroBirdwatch days (early October).
Cost: Europa Point free; Gibraltar Nature Reserve walking ticket £30 adult, £22 child 5–11 (2026), cable car closed for refurbishment.
Free or no-guide alternative: Free: Europa Point for seabirds all year and for storks and raptors drifting out over the Strait, and the public roads and paths below the reserve boundary (Rosia, Windmill Hill side) in a westerly when birds come in low.
Who runs access
- GONHS – public raptor watches and EuroBirdwatch events (NGO) — NGO; runs the Strait of Gibraltar Bird Observatory at Jews' Gate
Field-recording notes
Little to record from the raptors; the wind decides everything (a Levanter cloud sits on the Rock and kills the day, westerlies bring the birds). Europa Point has traffic, a mosque and the lighthouse foghorn; the Upper Rock has the cable car and tourist buses — but Jews' Gate at opening time is quiet and the Barbary partridges call. Macaques will investigate any kit left unattended. Ringing at Jews' Gate is a licensed operation — ask before recording there. No drones in the reserve.
