Where to go
- Sierra de Grazalema – Garganta Verde / Zahara — Limestone sierra with griffon colonies above the chorus; permit trails. Map
- Monfragüe dehesa – Arroyo de la Vid trail — Cork and holm oak dehesa; the richest Iberian chorus with azure-winged magpies. Map
- Parc del Garraf (Barcelona) — Coastal garrigue with Sardinian warbler and blue rock thrush; Barcelona airport approaches. Map
- Cabo de Gata (Almería) — Semi-desert scrub: trumpeter finch, black wheatear, Dupont's lark historically; very dry acoustics. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Grazalema: free permits for the Garganta Verde and other restricted trails from the El Bosque or Zahara visitor centres (book ahead in spring). Monfragüe: the Arroyo de la Vid trail from Villarreal is free. Garraf: public park trails from the Plana Novella road. Cabo de Gata: the coast road and tracks.
Cost: Free (Grazalema permits are free).
Field-recording notes
Dehesa is private: use the public trails and roads in Monfragüe and the Grazalema permit trails (free permits from the Zahara/El Bosque visitor centres). Dry, hard landscapes with little reverb — detail over space. Stone-pine and cork-oak canopies cut wind well; the open steppe does not.
