When is the best time?
Peak: 25 Apr – 20 May. Last week of April to 20 May; unpaired males sing all night until pairing
Active from 15 Apr to 15 Jun (April to June) in a typical year.
Time of day
Pure night song from 23:00 to 03:00 — the BER night-flight ban (00:00–05:00) makes 00:30–04:00 the cleanest window; the dawn chorus builds from about 04:00 (an hour before sunrise in May).
- Night song: 23:00 → 03:00
- Dawn chorus: 1 h before sunrise → 1 h after sunrise
What will you hear?
Dense nightingale song with several males counter-singing within 100 m, over a city bed — trains, sirens, the airport approach; in the Grunewald and on the Havel shores, a cleaner mix with tawny owl and reed warblers.
Binoculars?
No binoculars needed. Night song from park scrub within metres; nothing to see.
Where to go
- Tiergarten (Großer Tiergarten) — Highest density in the city centre; traffic from Straße des 17. Juni all night — an honest urban-nightingale document. Map
- Tempelhofer Feld edges — Scrub margins of the old airfield; closes at night (gates), so dusk and the early morning opening. Map
- Treptower Park / Plänterwald — Riverside scrub; several territories; S-Bahn on one side. Map
- Grunewald – Havel shore (Schildhorn, Lieper Bucht) — Forest edge nightingales without the traffic; Tegel/BER flight paths mostly avoid it after 23:00. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Tiergarten, Treptower Park/Plänterwald and the Grunewald Havel shore are open 24 h — S-Bahn/U-Bahn to Tiergarten, Treptower Park or Grunewald and walk. Tempelhofer Feld gates close at night (dusk and early morning only). No permits.
Cost: Free.
Field-recording notes
The Museum für Naturkunde's 'Forschungsfall Nachtigall' collected 8,000+ hours of citizen recordings with the Naturblick app — worth submitting to and reading for territory maps. Berlin parks are legally open at night (Tempelhofer Feld excepted) and nightingales are habituated to people; no permits needed. BER's night flight ban (00:00–05:00, with exceptions) makes 00:30–04:00 the cleanest window. The nightingale's low-frequency whistles interact with traffic noise (Berlin birds sing louder and higher on weekdays — published), which is itself a project.
