How to go on your own, and what it costs
Parco della Maremma: the itineraries need a ticket by day (parcomaremma.eu), but the public road from Alberese to Marina di Alberese and the village edges are free at night — scops owls call from the village trees. Salento: any olive-grove lane outside Otranto. Parco del Ticino: free; park at the Bereguardo pontoon bridge or Vigevano river car parks and walk the riverside paths.
Cost: Free from public roads; Parco della Maremma itinerary ticket €10 adult / €5 reduced (main itineraries; €5 / €2 for the short ones) by day (parco-maremma.it, prices undated).
Field-recording notes
Scops owls are often in village gardens. Farm dogs are the usual problem in rural Italy — the further from farms the better. Cars on white roads stop after midnight. No playback for scops: it draws males across territories.
