When is the best time?

Peak: 10 May – 10 Jul. Mid May to early July

Active from 1 Apr to 15 Aug (April to August) in a typical year.

Time of day

Colonies are loudest from sunrise to about 10:00, before the afternoon winds; flamingo flights between lagoons from an hour before sunset to dusk; frogs in the rice fields after dark.

What will you hear?

Audouin's gull colony (historically over half the world population at Punta de la Banya) as a nasal, laughing wall of sound, tern colonies screaming over the salt pans, flamingos honking across the lagoons, and frogs in the rice fields at night.

Binoculars?

Telescope recommended. Colonies are closed and viewed from the salt-works gate and hides at 300 m+; scope recommended, binoculars for flamingos.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Public roads and viewpoints: the Salines de la Trinitat gate viewpoint at the end of the Platja del Trabucador road, the La Tancada lagoon road and hides, the L'Encanyissada observation towers — all free. MónNatura Delta centre charges entry. El Fangar spit is closed in the breeding season.

Cost: Free; MónNatura Delta entry €10 adult, €14 with guided tour (2026).

Field-recording notes

The delta is rice country: pumps, tractors and, from late August, intense wildfowling from the 'barraques' — spring and early summer are shot-free. Colonies are strictly closed; long shotgun or parabola from the viewpoints. The tramuntana and marinada winds are strong most afternoons; dawn is calm. Note that the Audouin's colony at La Banya has partly relocated to the Valencia and Murcia coasts since the mid-2010s — numbers fluctuate.
