Active from 1 Jan to 31 Dec (all year) in a typical year.
Time of day
Colony honking and marching displays peak from sunrise to about 09:00; flights to the feeding lagoons pass low over the étangs from an hour before sunset to dusk. Pont de Gau opens 09:00 (10:00 in winter); the Digue à la Mer is open at all hours.
- Morning colony: sunrise → 09:00

What will you hear?
Goose-like honking from thousands of birds, the massed 'marching' displays, and flights of hundreds passing low over the étangs at dusk.
Binoculars?
Binoculars helpful. Pont de Gau birds are within metres; the Fangassier colony is 500 m+ from the dyke, so binoculars or a scope there.
Where to go
- Parc ornithologique du Pont de Gau — Habituated flamingos within metres of the paths; paid entry, opens 9am (10am in winter). D570 traffic alongside. Map
- Étang du Fangassier (breeding island) — The only French breeding colony; closed to the public — view and record from the Digue à la Mer track. Map
- Salin de Giraud / Salins d'Aigues-Mortes saltpans — Thousands feeding in the pans; industrial salt works and mistral. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Digue à la Mer: free, open to walkers and cyclists at all hours — park at the Salin de Giraud end (La Palissade) or at the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer end and walk east; the Fangassier colony is viewed from the dyke, never approached. Pont de Gau: ticketed park on the D570, reception 09:00–18:00, independent visits until sunset. Saltpans: view from the D36d/D36 roadsides.
Cost: Digue à la Mer free; Parc ornithologique du Pont de Gau €8.50 adult (2026).
Field-recording notes
The mistral is the enemy — it can blow for days; the Camargue is flat and offers no shelter. Mosquitoes from May. Colony access is prohibited (Réserve nationale); the Digue à la Mer is open to walkers and cyclists at all hours. Winter brings hunting on the private marshes around the reserve.
