When is the best time?
Peak: 15 Oct – 5 Nov. Mid October to early November
Active from 5 Oct to 15 Nov (October to November) in a typical year.
Time of day
Bucks groan hardest from first light to mid morning (place the rig at dawn); a second bout from an hour before sunset into dusk.
- Morning groaning: 30 min before sunrise → 3 h after sunrise
- Evening groaning: 1 h before sunset → last light
What will you hear?
Bucks' rhythmic belching groans from a traditional rutting stand a few hundred metres south-west of the Eremitage lodge, antler clatter, does barking; sika stags' eerie whistling in the same weeks.
Binoculars?
No binoculars needed. The rutting stand is 30–40 m off across open parkland; the bucks are in plain view.
Where to go
- Rutting stand SW of Eremitageslottet — The bucks gather on the same ground every year; approach from the plain at first light. Map
- Fortunens Indelukke / Ulvedalene — Wooded valleys on the west side; sika and fallow; quieter from the coast road. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
S-train to Klampenborg, walk in through the red gate and up to the Eremitage plain — free, open 24 h; approach the rutting stand from the plain at first light and stay 30–40 m off.
Cost: Free.
Field-recording notes
Same access and noise picture as the red deer rut: free, open all night, urban rim. The fallow stand is compact, so a static stereo pair placed at dawn 30–40 m off the stand and left running is the way; bucks tolerate stationary people. Do not enter the stand itself or stand between bucks. Autumn fog on the Eremitage plain is common and beautifully damping.
