When is the best time?
Peak: 24 Sep – 15 Oct. Last week of Sept to mid Oct
Active from 10 Sep to 10 Nov (September to November) in a typical year.
Time of day
Be in place 30 min before sunset; roaring builds through dusk and runs all night at peak, with a second strong bout from about 1 h before sunrise to 2 h after. Still, frosty mornings carry it furthest.
- Evening roaring: 30 min before sunset → 2 h after last light
- Dawn roaring: 1 h before sunrise → 2 h after sunrise
What will you hear?
Stags roaring and groaning, antler clashes, hinds barking alarm, animals crashing through bracken and heather.
Binoculars?
No binoculars needed. Roars carry 2 km in the dark; binoculars only add to daytime views of stags on the open moor. Keep 50 m off in Richmond Park.
Where to go
- Isle of Rùm (NatureScot NNR), Kilmory glen — Long-term research population — stay on tracks and away from study animals. No traffic; ferry-only island, so book the bothy or Kinloch accommodation. Map
- Exmoor (Dunkery Beacon, Horner Wood, Porlock) — Rangers run dawn rut safaris. A39 audible on the northern combes; the high moor is clean. Map
- RSPB Minsmere, Suffolk — Stags on the heath and in the reedbed with bittern and water rail as a bonus. Sizewell hum from the east on still nights. Map
- Richmond Park, London — Easy access but constant Heathrow arrivals and traffic. Park rule: stay 50 m from deer. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Exmoor: open-access moorland, free at all hours — park at Webber's Post or Dunkery Gate (National Trust car parks, Porlock side) and walk onto the combes above Horner Wood before dusk. Richmond Park: pedestrian gates are open 24 h (vehicle gates close at dusk in the rut); take the Tube/train to Richmond and walk in; the park rule is 50 m from deer. Rùm: CalMac ferry from Mallaig (foot passengers only), then the 8 km Kilmory track from Kinloch; stay at the Kinloch campsite/bunkhouse or the Dibidil bothy and keep to tracks near the research animals. Minsmere is dawn-to-dusk with a non-member entry fee; the Dunwich Heath side (National Trust) and the public footpaths around the reserve are open at night.
Cost: Free on Exmoor, in Richmond Park and on Rùm (CalMac Mallaig–Rùm £5.90 adult single, summer 2026); RSPB Minsmere £10 adult non-members (2026), members free.

Field-recording notes
Wind in Highland glens is the main enemy — pick still, cold mornings after a frost. Roars carry over 2 km, so distant ambiences with valley reverb are as valuable as close stags. No playback or calling; stags at peak are dangerous and will approach a call. Stalking season overlaps (stags to 20 Oct in Scotland) — on estate land expect rifle shots and ask the stalker where they are working. Rùm has no deer stalking on the NNR research area.
