How to go on your own, and what it costs
Bosco della Mesola: the 100 ha public sector is open 1 March–31 October on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and holidays, 08:00–16:00 in autumn (18:00 in summer); enter from Via dei Frassini 24 and walk or cycle the marked tracks — the reserve's page lists no entry ticket (2026). The Elciola core is guided-only (Carabinieri Biodiversità on request, or paid local-guide tours). San Rossore: the estate is visited on guided tours only (Centro Visite San Rossore, Cascine Vecchie). Ask the Mesola office about early access for recording.
Cost: Mesola public sector: no ticket listed by the reserve (2026); guided minibus/electric tours by local guides and San Rossore visits are paid (check current prices).
Free or no-guide alternative: Outside opening hours the stags can be heard from the public roads along the reserve fence: Via dei Frassini and the Po di Goro embankment road at dusk in late September are free and legal.
Field-recording notes
Both sites are gated with daytime hours, so this is a dawn-opening or dusk-closing session rather than a night one — ask the reserve office (Carabinieri Biodiversità at Mesola) about early access for recording. Mesola is a strict reserve: no leaving the tracks, no drones.
