When is the best time?

Peak: 15 Sep – 10 Oct. Mid September to about 10 October; roaring runs to mid October

Active from 5 Sep to 20 Oct (September to October) in a typical year.

Time of day

Roaring is strongest in the hour after sunset and the hour around sunrise, and loudest before or after a cold night. Veluwezoom is open sunrise to sunset only, so there the last hour of daylight and first light are your windows; the public dikes and roads around the Oostvaardersplassen have no closing time.

What will you hear?

Stags roaring across open polder grassland with no cover to dampen it — an unusually long, clean reverb; antler clashes; geese lifting off the marsh behind; on the Veluwe, roars from the heath edge with wild boar grunting in the rides.

Binoculars?

Binoculars helpful. Oostvaardersplassen stags are often 200–800 m away on open grassland — binoculars or a scope from the Knardijk; on the Veluwe you mostly hear them from the heath edge. Buitencentrum lends binoculars.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Oostvaardersplassen: the core grazing area is only visited on ranger excursions, but the Knardijk, Oostvaardersveld, Kotterbos and Hollandse Hout are free and open (some routes closed in winter rest, announced on site). Park at the Buitencentrum (Kitsweg 1, Lelystad) or along the Knardijk. Veluwezoom: start the Bronstroute at Paviljoen De Posbank (bus/train to Rheden, 2 km); the through-road over the Posbank is partly closed to cars since July 2024 — see posbank-parkeren.nl; area open sunrise to sunset only.

Cost: Free; Posbank area parking is limited and may be paid (check posbank-parkeren.nl).

Free or no-guide alternative: Walk the free Bronstroute from Paviljoen De Posbank in the last two hours before sunset, or stand on the Knardijk at the Oostvaardersplassen after dark — both are public and cost nothing.

Who runs access

Field-recording notes

The Oostvaardersplassen core area is closed except on guided excursions, so your free rig goes on the Knardijk or the Oostvaardersveld edge: wide-open acoustics, but the A6 motorway and the Lelystad–Almere railway run along the south-west side — face north-east and use the dike as a baffle. Staatsbosbeheer noted the 2025 rut was strong despite lower deer numbers after the culls; numbers change year to year. Veluwezoom: the heath is a no-entry rest zone, you listen from the ring paths; the area closes at sunset, so evening roaring means the last hour of light. The ranger-led rut excursions into the closed core area sell out within hours of release. Never follow the roar into the heath; sit and wait.
