When is the best time?
Peak: 12 Oct – 31 Oct. Mid to late October
Active from 1 Oct to 15 Nov (October to November) in a typical year.
Time of day
Bucks groan hardest from first light to mid morning; a second bout from an hour before sunset. Petworth gates open 08:00, so dawn there needs prior arrangement; the New Forest and Dean are open all night.
- Morning groaning: 30 min before sunrise → 3 h after sunrise
- Evening groaning: 1 h before sunset → last light
What will you hear?
Bucks' belching, rhythmic groans from rutting stands (true leks in some parks), antler clatter, does and fawns moving through leaf litter.
Binoculars?
No binoculars needed. Groans from close rutting stands at first light; park herds are habituated, so no optics needed.
Where to go
- Petworth Park, West Sussex (National Trust) — Largest herd in England, habituated. Park opens at 8am — dawn access needs advance arrangement with the estate. Map
- New Forest, Bolderwood — Wild herds; A31 audible from the northern edge, quieter towards Mark Ash Wood. Map
- Knole Park, Kent (National Trust) — Compact park with many bucks; Sevenoaks traffic and Gatwick approaches. Map
- Forest of Dean (Speech House woods) — Wild herds in woodland — more natural soundscape, harder to find. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
New Forest: park at Bolderwood (Forestry England pay-and-display) and walk into Mark Ash Wood — the forest is open access day and night. Forest of Dean: park at Speech House and walk the rides; also open at night. Petworth: the Deer Park is free but gated 08:00–20:00 (North car park for the park); ask the estate office in advance if you want dawn access. Knole: park hours only.
Cost: Free; Petworth car parks £3 (North) / £4 (main) for NT non-members (2026); Forestry England Bolderwood car park £1.50 (1 h) / £3 (2 h) / £5 (4 h) / £8 (over 4 h), pay by RingGo, no cash (2026).
Who runs access
- National Trust Petworth – Deer Rut Guided Walk (NGO) — 2-hour guided walks on set dates late Oct–early Nov.
Field-recording notes
The groans are low and rhythmic with a lot of energy under 200 Hz — a good contrast to red deer. In parks the rutting stands are traditional, so static rigs can be placed the evening before and left overnight. Deer parks close at night; the New Forest and Dean are open access.
