When is the best time?
Peak: 1 Dec – 31 Mar. December to March: dry mornings, birds in song before the rains
Active from 1 Jan to 31 Dec (all year) in a typical year.
Time of day
From first light to about 09:00, park opening hours permitting (typically from 07:00–08:00 — ask at the gate for an early-birding entry)
- Dawn chorus: first light → 09:00
What will you hear?
A relict rainforest chorus — greenbuls, cuckoos, hornbills and monkeys — with the Abidjan motorway as a constant low bed. Useful as a first morning in the country and as a way of understanding what the forest belt sounded like.
Binoculars?
Binoculars helpful. Greenbuls and hornbills in tall forest along the trails; binoculars help, the chorus needs nothing.
Where to go
- Parc national du Banco – main entrance, Adjamé side — 3,000 ha of forest surrounded by the city; guided trails, the arboretum and the Banco river. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Entry with an OIPR guide (park rule and safety). Cheapest legal way: taxi to the main gate on the Autoroute du Nord, pay entry and the guide at the gate.
Cost: OIPR entry plus guide; check current prices.
Free or no-guide alternative: No free way inside; the forest edge along the public roads on the Yopougon and Adjamé sides gives the hornbills and greenbuls at dawn, with the traffic.
Who runs access
- Office Ivoirien des Parcs et Réserves – Banco (park authority) — Guided trails
Field-recording notes
Traffic on the Autoroute du Nord and the ring road is unavoidable; the lowest noise is deep on the northern trails before 08:00. Entry through OIPR with a guide; the park has had security incidents in the past — go with the guide, not alone. Humidity and the city's dust make dawn hazy but still.
