Where to go
- Nationalparkhaus Hardegg and the Thaya loop trails — Austria's smallest town; trails along the river gorge on both banks (border bridge to Čížov). Map
- Umlaufberg meander — Classic viewpoint above the incised meander; cliffs with eagle owl; forest quiet. Map
- Merkersdorf – Kaja castle ruin — Dry oak forest, middle spotted woodpecker, nightjar at dusk on the heath edges. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Hardegg: park at the Nationalparkhaus and walk the river-gorge loop trails on both banks (border bridge to Čížov is open on foot); trails only, no entry fee. Umlaufberg and Kaja from Merkersdorf.
Cost: Free.
Field-recording notes
A binational park with almost no traffic — the loudest thing at night is the river. Trails only (park law), and the Czech Podyjí side has the same rule; the border is open on foot. Eagle owls nest on the gorge cliffs — no approach, no playback, no torches on the rock in Feb–May. Hardegg is fog-prone in spring mornings, which mutes the few houses and lifts the chorus. Hunting is excluded from the park.
