White-tailed eagles: Smøla, Lofoten and the Trollfjord

White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) — Norway holds most of Europe's population; Smøla has the world's densest breeding concentration. Smøla (Møre og Romsdal), Raftsundet/Trollfjord (Lofoten–Vesterålen), Varanger, Norway.
Best time: 1 Mar – 15 May (March to May). Where: Smøla – Straumen harbour, Trollfjord / Raftsundet (RIB from Svolvær), Varanger fjord (Vadsø – Vardø) (Norway). Time of day: Territorial calling is best from first light to about 3 h after sunrise in March–April, from the shore road.

When is the best time?
Peak: 1 Mar – 15 May. March to mid May for territorial calling and display; boat safaris year-round, eagles fed by tour boats in the Trollfjord
Active from 1 Jan to 31 Dec (all year) in a typical year.
Time of day
Territorial calling is best from first light to about 3 h after sunrise in March–April, from the shore road; safaris sail late morning (check operators).
- Dawn calling: 30 min before sunrise → 3 h after sunrise
- Safaris (check times): 10:00 → 14:00
What will you hear?
The eagle's yelping 'klee-klee-klee' duet from a nest crag, wing-rush of a 2.4 m bird taking a fish 10 m from the boat, gull and tern colonies, otters whistling in the skerries.
Binoculars?
Binoculars helpful. Fed eagles pass within 10 m of the boat; binoculars from the shore roads for nest crags 300 m off.
Where to go
- Smøla – Straumen harbour — Archipelago boat safaris leave from here; c. 50 breeding pairs on a small island group; wind farm on the island (turbine noise and eagle mortality). Map
- Trollfjord / Raftsundet (RIB from Svolvær) — Eagles habituated to fish thrown from tour boats — reliable close passes, but a fed and noisy context. Map
- Varanger fjord (Vadsø – Vardø) — Eagles along the E75 coast in numbers, especially at fish-processing plants in winter. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Smøla and Varanger: drive the shore roads (Smøla's Fv669, the E75 Vadsø–Vardø) at first light in March–April — eagles call from nest crags within earshot of the road; 300 m from nests. Trollfjord: RIB and boat safaris from Svolvær (paid, fed eagles).
Cost: Free from the roads; boat safaris (check current prices).
Field-recording notes
The Trollfjord safaris are RIBs at speed with feeding — spectacular visually, acoustically an outboard; ask for a slow boat, and note that feeding wild eagles is tolerated but not a natural recording. Smøla is calmer (small boats, idle at the skerries) but the wind farm hum is audible across the island. Nest sites are protected: no approach within 300 m March–July, no drones. Eagle vocalisation is best at dawn in March–April near territories — from the shore road on Smøla or Varanger without a boat at all.
