When is the best time?
Peak: 15 May – 31 Aug. Late May to August — long, warm evenings; beavers are active year-round but the creeks are closed to boats in winter
Active from 1 Apr to 31 Oct (April to October) in a typical year.
Time of day
Beavers emerge in the last hour before sunset and work through dusk; the rule that boats may only be in the creeks between sunrise and sunset means a canoe gets you the first hour of activity, and the jetties and dikes the hour after dark.
- Beavers emerge (canoe, before the sunset limit): 75 min before sunset → sunset
- From jetties and dikes after boats must leave: sunset → 1 h after last light
What will you hear?
A beaver's tail slap, gnawing on willow, the push of its wake in a still creek; reed warblers and cuckoos at dusk in May; the murmur of thousands of geese and ducks settling on the open water at night; ospreys calling in spring.
Binoculars?
Binoculars helpful. Beavers swim within 10–30 m of a quiet canoe; binoculars for eagles over the creeks. After dark a red torch; thermal helps on the banks.
Where to go
- Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht (Sliedrechtse Biesbosch) — Visitor centre, canoe routes start here; tidal creeks with ~80 cm range and strong currents at high tide. Map
- Natuurpoort / Jachthaven Vissershang, Hank (Brabantse Biesbosch) — Preferred launch for the Brabantse Biesbosch (avoids the Amer shipping at Drimmelen); two signed canoe routes; parking. Map
- Biesbosch MuseumEiland, Werkendam — Museum island with jetties and evening 'darkness' walks; dark-sky events in autumn. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Rent a canoe at the launch points or bring your own (jetties marked on the Staatsbosbeheer Biesbosch map): launch at Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht or Vissershang (Hank); paddle only between sunrise and sunset; stay out of reedbeds and rest zones; dogs on leads. Free access on foot and by paddle; mooring fees via the 'Biesboschvaantje'.
Cost: Free on foot; canoe rental and mooring fee (check current prices).
Who runs access
- Beleef de Biesbosch – canoeing and guided excursions (park portal) (park authority) — Rental points, signed routes and guided tours; evening beaver boat and kayak tours run by Staatsbosbeheer guides in spring–summer.
Field-recording notes
A canoe (own or rented at the launch points) is the only quiet platform — but creeks close to boats at sunset, so plan the hydrophone/tail-slap session for the last hour of light and move to a jetty or the Noordwaard dikes for the dark. Wild camping is banned; the pole campsites (paalkampeerplaatsen) are a legal way to be on the water at night. Breeding rest 1 Jan–1 Aug around nests, winter rest 1 Nov–1 Mar closes some creeks; osprey nest zones may be closed at short notice. Noise: the Merwede and Amer shipping lanes and the A27; the inner Brabantse creeks are the quietest. Drones banned.
