How to go on your own, and what it costs
The LIPU and WWF oases are fenced with opening hours and entry tickets: Massaciuccoli (Via del Porto 154, boardwalks and hides), Torrile e Trecasali, Valle Averto. Phone or email the wardens in advance for dawn access — they are usually helpful for recordists. Outside the fences, public roads and lakeside promenades give the reedbed chorus for free.
Cost: Massaciuccoli: free entry for individual visitors (oasis site, 2026); Torrile e Trecasali and Valle Averto entry tickets (check current prices, typically a few euros).
Free or no-guide alternative: Torre del Lago Puccini: the public lakeside (Belvedere Puccini) and the Viale dei Tigli / lakeshore path face the Massaciuccoli reedbed — great reed warblers and booming bitterns at dawn, free and open at all hours.
Field-recording notes
Oases have opening hours — arrange dawn access with the LIPU/WWF wardens, who are usually helpful for recordists. Mosquitoes are serious; wind on the open plain drops around dawn. Bittern and little bittern are protected breeders — hides only.
