Where to go
- Nationalpark Kalkalpen – Reichraming / Hintergebirge — ÖBf rangers run 'Hirschlos'n' evenings; the Hintergebirge is a large trackless forest wilderness with ~200 km of closed forest roads. Map
- Nationalpark Kalkalpen – Bodinggraben / Hengstpass — Southern park; deer meadows; the old forest roads are walkable. Map
- Nationalpark Gesäuse – Johnsbach / Gstatterboden — Enns gorge; excursions led by the Steiermärkische Landesforste hunters; roaring stags echo off the Hochtor walls. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Kalkalpen: park at the Reichraming or Bodinggraben trailheads and walk the closed forest roads at night (permitted; stay off game paths); ask the park office which compartments are being culled. Gesäuse: the Enns trails from Gstatterboden or Johnsbach. Ranger 'Hirschlos'n' evenings from Mayrwinkl (Roßleithen).
Cost: Free; Kalkalpen Hirschlos'n ranger evenings €28 adult (Reichraming/Roßleithen), €19 (Molln) (2026); Gesäuse rut excursions (check current prices).
Who runs access
- Nationalpark Kalkalpen – Hirschlos'n (park authority) — Ranger-led rut evenings from Mayrwinkl, late Sept; booking nationalpark@kalkalpen.at.
- Nationalpark Gesäuse – rut excursions (park authority) — Excursions led by the Landesforste hunters in the rut.
Field-recording notes
Both parks are managed with ÖBf/Landesforste hunters who cull deer in the rut — join their excursions to know where hunting is and isn't that week; independent night walking on the forest roads is permitted but stay off game paths. The Gesäuse has the Enns and the Gesäusestraße (B146) as constant sound; the Kalkalpen Hintergebirge is one of the quietest forests in Austria (no through road). Cold-air drainage at night pushes sound down-valley — set up low. Ural owls are being reintroduced here and are strictly protected: no playback.
