Active from 1 Apr to 31 Oct (April to October) in a typical year.
Time of day

- Evening emergence: 1 h before sunset → 1 h after last light
What will you hear?
Tail-slaps, gnawing on willow, kits whining in the lodge, surface swims and dives; frogs and night herons; the Danube.
Binoculars?
Binoculars helpful. Beavers 20–30 m off at dusk; binoculars help in the last light, the boat tour brings you closer.
Where to go
- 'Biberperspektiven' evening boat tour from Orth an der Donau — Park-run inflatable-boat tour along the Altarme; the sanctioned way to get close. Map
- Fadenbach and Kühwörther Wasser (Orth – Eckartsau) — Long oxbow system with many lodges; dyke path. Map
- Lobau – Dechantlacke / Panozzalacke — Vienna side; beavers habituated to walkers; airport noise. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Sit still on a dyke or oxbow bank 20–30 m from a lodge at dusk: the Fadenbach/Kühwörther Wasser dyke path from Orth or Eckartsau, the Lobau lakes from the Nationalpark-Haus. Trails open at night, no off-trail. The park's evening inflatable-boat tour brings you closer than you can get on foot.
Cost: Free; 'Biberperspektiven' boat tour €37 adult (2027 dates, min 10 people).
Who runs access
- Nationalpark Donau-Auen – Biberperspektiven evening boat tour (park authority) — 3.5-h inflatable-boat tour from Orth, May–Aug; registration 3 days ahead.
Field-recording notes
Beavers are protected and lodges may not be approached; staying still on the bank 20–30 m off is fine, and the park boat tour brings you closer than you could otherwise get legally. Hydrophone in the oxbow for gnawing and underwater entries; the water is still and shallow, so barge noise from the main river is heavily attenuated. Mosquitoes in June are the true cost. Night trail use is allowed; off-trail is not.
