When is the best time?

Active from 10 Sep to 20 Oct (September to October) in a typical year.
Time of day
Roaring from about 30 min before sunset, strongest in the first 3 h of darkness and intermittent all night; second bout from an hour before sunrise to an hour after, when doline inversions carry it best.
- Evening roaring: 30 min before sunset → 3 h after last light
- Dawn roaring: 1 h before sunrise → 1 h after sunrise
What will you hear?
Stags roaring across dolines and beech slopes — the Dinaric forest gives long, clean reverberant tails; antler clashes, hinds barking, Ural owls and dormice in the same nights.
Binoculars?
No binoculars needed. Roars across the dolines after dark; ears only, stay near the car in bear country.
Where to go
- Snežnik plateau, Leskova dolina – Mašun — Large forest hunting ground (state hunting reserve); roaring stags along the forest road at night. Bear country — stay in or near the car. Map
- Kočevski Rog (Rog road above Kočevske Poljane) — Doline landscape; multiple stags audible from a single ridge. Map
- Pokljuka plateau, Triglav National Park — Alpine spruce plateau, 1,200–1,400 m; roaring in the clearings around Rudno polje, sometimes with black grouse and chamois. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Snežnik: the Leskova dolina–Mašun forest road is public — drive or walk it at dusk and stop at the clearings (bear country: stay near the car). Kočevski Rog: the Rog road on foot from the gate. Pokljuka: park at Rudno polje and walk the plateau tracks; national park, no driving forest roads at night. Ask the lovska družina which compartments are hunted.
Cost: Free.
Field-recording notes
Rut coincides with the red deer hunting season (from mid August) and the dormouse season (from 1 October) — expect hunters' cars on forest roads at dusk and rifle shots at dawn; ask the local hunting family (lovska družina) or Forest Service which compartments are being hunted. Frost pockets in dolines give inversion layers that carry roars beautifully but also every distant chainsaw. No feeding stations in the Kočevje forests (unlike parks) so stags are wild; stay off game trails in the dark. Pokljuka is in the national park: quiet zones, no driving forest roads at night beyond Rudno polje.
