Where to go
- Ptujsko jezero (Ptuj Lake) — Slovenia's largest reservoir; the biggest waterbird concentrations in the country. Viewing from the south dyke. Map
- Ormoške lagune nature reserve (DOPPS) — Former sugar-factory settling ponds restored by DOPPS; hides, water buffalo grazing; geese and ducks. Map
- Drava at Šturmovci (Sturmovci) — Old river channels between the two lakes; goosander, kingfisher, wintering eagles. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Ptuj: walk or cycle the south dyke of the lake from Ptuj (car park by the dam). Ormož lagoons: DOPPS reserve with hides and trails, free, from the Ormož side. Šturmovci: the old-channel tracks between the lakes.
Cost: Free.
Field-recording notes
Reservoir shores are bare and windy; the dam spillway is a constant low-frequency source at Ptuj. Ormož lagoons are quieter but sit next to the railway. Hunting: waterfowl shooting is restricted on the reserve but occurs on the Drava outside it — Sundays in winter are loud. Dawn gull departures are a wing-noise event best taken from the dyke with a wide pair; the settling ponds at Ormož let you get close to geese in the hides.
