When is the best time?

Peak: 25 Sep – 10 Oct. Last week of September to 10 October (slightly later further north)

Active from 15 Sep to 25 Oct (September to October) in a typical year.

Time of day

Bulls call and thrash most from about an hour before sunset into the first hour of dark, and from an hour before sunrise to 2 h after; drop-rigs on bog margins for a week catch the rest.

What will you hear?

Subdued compared with red deer: bulls' low grunts and 'oouh' calls, cows' long nasal moans, antlers thrashing in willow and birch, heavy splashing in bog; tawny owl and cranes overhead; rifle shots — the hunt opens 25 September.

Binoculars?

Binoculars helpful. Bulls thrash in birch edges at dusk, mostly heard; binoculars or a thermal imager help pick them out in the half-light.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Forest roads and bog edges in Trysil, Engerdal and Finnskogen under allemannsretten — ask the local grunneierlag which areas are hunted that day (hunt from 25 Sept) and leave drop-rigs on bog margins. Telemark: canoe hire at Bø for the river beavers and moose.

Cost: Free; summer moose safaris and canoe hire optional (check current prices).

Field-recording notes

The moose hunt (25 Sept–23 Dec) opens in the middle of the rut and Norway's forests are hunted intensively — landowners, dogs and shots are part of any September–October recording, and walking unannounced in a hunting area is unwise. Ask the local grunneierlag which days and areas are hunted. Bulls come to imitated cow calls (hunters use them); don't. Drop-rigs on bog margins for a week in late September get more than any evening sit. Frost and first snow help propagation; the eastern valleys are largely free of traffic at night.
