Active from 15 Oct to 15 Apr (October to April) in a typical year.
Time of day
High-tide roosts on the lagoon mouth sandbars in the 2 hours around high water; dawn canoe into the mangrove arms
- Lagoon dawn: first light → 150 min after sunrise
- Evening roost: 90 min before sunset → sunset
Depends on the tide: best around high tide. Check local tide tables.
What will you hear?
Tern and wader roosts on the bar where the lagoon meets the Atlantic, mangrove creek sound in the northern arms, surf on Robertsport's beaches and, at night, fruit bats and frogs from the forested shore.
Binoculars?
Binoculars essential. Roosts on the bar at 100–300 m from the shore or canoe; binoculars needed, scope better.
Where to go
- Robertsport – lagoon shore and canoe landing — Surf town at the lagoon mouth; dugout hire from the fishermen; guesthouses. Map
- Lake Piso northern arms (Mole creek / Mafa river) — Mangrove channels reached by canoe or the Bomi road; the quietest water. Map
- Massatin island — Forested island in the lake with monkeys and a heron roost; canoe only, ask permission in Robertsport. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Bush taxi Monrovia–Robertsport (about 3 h); the lagoon shore, the bar and the beaches are free and open; hire a fisherman's dugout for the mangrove arms and Massatin.
Cost: Free (2026); dugout hire check current prices.
Field-recording notes
Surf dominates the mouth; the inner lake is calm at dawn. Fishing canoes are paddled, so engine noise is low. Humidity and salt; the harmattan is mild this far south. The lake is a multiple-use reserve — no permit for the shore, an FDA/SCNL word for research. Robertsport is a surf destination and busy at weekends.
