How to go on your own, and what it costs
FDA approval and community/ranger guides (park rule); no independent entry. Cheapest legal route: contact SCNL in Monrovia, FDA permit, bush taxi to Bopolu, community guide by the day.
Cost: FDA permit, guide and community fees — check current prices with SCNL/FDA.
Free or no-guide alternative: The Monrovia–Bopolu road and the community forests around Bopolu carry the hornbill and primate chorus at dawn from the public roadside, free; the park interior and the picathartes sites have no legal free alternative.
Who runs access
- Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL) (NGO) — Co-manager; contact for visits and research access.
- Forestry Development Authority (park authority) — Permits.
Field-recording notes
No tourism programme yet: access is via SCNL and the FDA as a research or documentary visit, with community guides from the edge villages. Same humidity and no-charging rules as Sapo. Artisanal mining and logging on the edges mean chainsaws and generators in the buffer zone; the core is clean. Picathartes: fixed distance, no flash, no visits in the peak nesting rains.
