Where to go
- Crkvine info centre and 600 m boardwalk (ornithological reserve) — Bird tower at the end of the boardwalk in the north-west reedbed; the reserve is the core Natura 2000 zone. Map
- Prosika canal and southern shore — The lake's outlet to the sea; wintering ducks close in cold spells. Map
- Kamenjak viewpoint — Ridge above the lake — visual, but a good place to hear the whole lake at dawn in still air. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Crkvine boardwalk and tower: park ticket (2026 price list on the park site), reached from the D8 road via the Crkvine car park; the info centre is seasonal but the boardwalk is reachable outside its hours. Kamenjak viewpoint and the Prosika canal: free public roads. Night access to the boardwalk is not formally offered — ask the park.
Cost: Park ticket for the reserve boardwalk (check the 2026 price list); Kamenjak and Prosika free.
Free or no-guide alternative: Kamenjak viewpoint on the ridge road above the lake at dawn: the whole lake's rafts in still air, free; Prosika canal for close winter ducks.
Field-recording notes
The lake lies between the A1 motorway (west, 3 km) and the coastal Magistrala road — the reedbed at Crkvine is nearest the motorway, so wind direction matters; north-easterly bora both quietens the road and kills recording. Hunting: the nature park still has hunting zones outside the reserve — coot and duck shooting on winter weekends, so record midweek. Cicadas from June, and the Pakoštane campsites bring people to the boardwalk by day. Night access to the boardwalk is not formally offered; the park is approachable about it for research/recording.
