When is the best time?
Peak: 5 Sep – 22 Sep. First three weeks of September — earlier than the Alps
Active from 1 Sep to 5 Oct (September to October) in a typical year.
Time of day
Roaring starts about 30 min before sunset, builds into a continuous chorus over the water in the first 3 h of darkness and runs all night at peak; a second bout from an hour before sunrise. Park rut programmes go out in the evening and early morning (small groups, book ahead); the public dykes are legal all night.
- Evening roaring: 30 min before sunset → 3 h after last light
- Dawn roaring: 1 h before sunrise → 1 h after sunrise
What will you hear?
Dozens of stags roaring across flooded willow-poplar forest and reed — over water the roars carry for kilometres and stack into a continuous chorus; splashing chases, antler clashes, wild boar grunting, night herons and geese overhead.
Binoculars?
No binoculars needed. Roars carry across the water to the dyke after dark; ears only.

How to go on your own, and what it costs
The core is a Special Zoological Reserve with no night entry except on the park's rut programme (book early). Free and legal at any hour: the Danube flood dyke between Zmajevac and Batina (drive to Zmajevac, walk the dyke) and the Kopačevo village edge — stags roar across the water from the reserve. By day, park entry is a €3 ticket at Kopačevo.
Cost: Dykes free; park entry €3, deer rut tour €40 per person per hour, boat trip €15 (2026).
Free or no-guide alternative: Walk the public Danube dyke at Zmajevac–Batina at dusk: multi-stag chorus across the floodplain without entering the reserve.
Who runs access
- JU Park prirode Kopački rit – deer rut tours (park authority) — Evening and early-morning rut programmes in Sept–Oct, small groups.
Field-recording notes
The core is a Special Zoological Reserve: no entry without the park, no night entry at all except on park programmes — book the rut excursions early (the park's price list and events page). The public dykes and the Kopačevo village edge are legal all night and still give big multi-stag ambiences. Noise: Osijek is 12 km away (some hum), Danube barge traffic at night (slow, low-frequency, actually a good bed), mosquitoes in industrial quantities — a head net is not optional. Mist over the water after midnight gives beautiful long tails. Hunting is banned in the reserve, but the surrounding Belje hunting grounds are active in the rut — gunshots at dawn are common on the fringes.
