When is the best time?
Peak: 1 Dec – 28 Feb. December to February, before the lagoons draw down
Active from 1 Nov to 15 Apr (November to April) in a typical year.
Time of day
From first light for the duck flight and the egret roost dispersal; the last hour before dark for the roost return
- Dawn: first light → 2 h after sunrise
- Roost return: 1 h before sunset → last light
What will you hear?
Whistling ducks and garganey over the largest freshwater lagoons in the country, fish eagles, and a mixed heron and egret roost that fills the lakeside trees at dusk.
Binoculars?
Binoculars essential. Duck flocks and the heron roost are 100–500 m across the lagoon; binoculars needed, a scope pays.
Where to go
- Lagoa de Cufada (park post, Buba road) — Ramsar site since 1990 and natural park; the post is on the Buba–Fulacunda road with tracks to the lake shore. Map
- Buba – Rio Grande de Buba — Town and river; boats up the Rio Grande for manatees and mangrove birds. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Bush taxi Bissau–Buba (about 4 h), then a moto-taxi or walk to the park post; a small entry fee and a local guide are expected inside the park (IBAP rule), but the lagoon shore near the road and the Buba riverfront are open.
Cost: Park entry small; guide fee — check current prices at the post.
Free or no-guide alternative: The Buba–Fulacunda road skirts the lagoon: the dawn duck flight and the evening roost are seen and heard from the roadside for free.
Who runs access
- IBAP – Cufada park post (park authority) — Park guides.
Field-recording notes
Little-visited and quiet: villages and the Buba road are the only noise. The lake margins are cattle-grazed and mosquito-rich; the park post can provide a guide but does not always insist. Roads are poor in the rains.
