When is the best time?

Peak: 15 Nov – 20 Dec. Chamois and isard mid Nov to early Dec; ibex December into early January

Active from 1 Nov to 15 Jan (November to January) in a typical year.

Time of day

Chases and horn clashes through the day, most from an hour after sunrise as the sun hits the slopes until late morning, and again from 15:00 to sunset.

What will you hear?

Horn clashes echoing off rock, snorting and hissing males chasing across scree, and the snow-muffled silence of winter valleys.

Binoculars?

Binoculars essential. Chases on slopes hundreds of metres above the trail in winter light; binoculars needed, a scope shows the clashes.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Vanoise: park at Pralognan or Champagny-le-Haut and walk the valley trails on snow; core-zone rules (no dogs, drones). Mercantour: the Madone de Fenestre and Boréon roads are ploughed to the car parks in early winter — walk from there. Pyrenees: Pont d'Espagne car park (paid) above Cauterets, then the path to the Lac de Gaube. Professional sound recording in the Vanoise needs the park's free authorisation.

Cost: Free; Pont d'Espagne car park €8 per day (€13 over 12 h) in summer (2026).

Field-recording notes

Visual more than sonic, but the winter noise floor is exceptional and horn impacts carry hundreds of metres. Drones are banned in all core zones; Vanoise requires a permit for professional filming/sound recording (see park's 'prises de vue et de son' page). Avalanche risk after snowfall.
