When is the best time?

Active from 1 Jun to 31 Dec (June to December) in a typical year.

Time of day

Marmots and chamois are most vocal from first light to about 3 h after sunrise, before the katabatic wind and hikers; again from 16:00 to sunset. Quiet in midday heat.

What will you hear?

Marmot alarm whistles echoing off limestone walls, chough flocks, ptarmigan croaking above the treeline, chamois hissing alarm sneezes; in autumn the roar of red deer from the valleys below.

Binoculars?

Binoculars helpful. Marmots whistle beside the Viševnik trail; binoculars for ibex and chamois on the Vršič screes.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Pokljuka: park at Rudno polje and walk to Viševnik (1.5 h). Vršič: the pass road (open in summer, bus from Kranjska Gora) and the trails from the top. Vrata: park at the Aljažev dom road end (fee in summer) and walk the valley. Marked trails only; no wild camping.

Cost: Free; Vrata valley parking and summer shuttle buses charge (check current prices).

Field-recording notes

The park's core zone forbids leaving marked trails and drones; wild camping is banned but bivouacking above the treeline is tolerated at hut-to-hut distances. Vršič and Pokljuka are the two noisy places (road and biathlon centre); Krma, Kot and Trenta side valleys are quieter. Katabatic wind sets in mid-morning — record at first light. Marmots are reintroduced and habituated near huts; do not feed. Ibex are still a small reintroduced herd and legally protected.
