When is the best time?
Peak: 18 Sep – 8 Oct. Mid Sept to early Oct; the last ten days of September are the peak
Active from 10 Sep to 25 Oct (September to October) in a typical year.
Time of day
Roaring starts about 30 min before sunset, peaks in the first 3 h of darkness and continues through the night at peak; second bout from an hour before sunrise to 2 h after. Cabañeros 4x4 rut tours run at 08:00 and 17:30 (3 h); Monfragüe roads are open all night.
- Evening roaring: 30 min before sunset → 3 h after last light
- Dawn roaring: 1 h before sunrise → 2 h after sunrise
What will you hear?
Stags roaring across dehesa and rocky sierra — three or four bellowing at once from the Monfragüe viewpoints while griffon vultures settle on the cliffs; wild boar and little owls in between.
Binoculars?
Binoculars helpful. Roars from the Monfragüe lay-bys need nothing; binoculars for stags on the dehesa and griffons on the cliffs before dark.
Where to go
- Monfragüe – Salto del Gitano / Villarreal de San Carlos — Free access on the park roads at all hours; the Salto del Gitano lay-by fills with cars at dusk in late September. Map
- Cabañeros – Casa Palillos (guided 4x4 only) — The 'raña' plains are visited only by the park's authorised 4x4 tours (about 3 h, booked through the park's Casa Palillos visitor centre); the tours are timed for the rut from mid Sept. Map
- Sierra de Andújar – Camino de la Lancha — Public track through hunting estates with very high deer density; also lynx country. Map
- Sierra Morena – Parque Natural Sierra de Hornachuelos — Cordoba side; quieter than Andújar. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Monfragüe: the EX-208 and the park road to Villarreal de San Carlos are public and open at all hours — park at the Salto del Gitano lay-by or in Villarreal and listen from the road and marked trails (no leaving the tracks). Sierra de Andújar: drive the Camino de la Lancha (public dirt track) from the Santuario road and stop on the verges. Hornachuelos: the park's marked trails from the Huerta del Rey visitor centre. Cabañeros' raña plains are 4x4-tour only, but the park's marked walking trails (Boquerón del Estena, etc.) are free.
Cost: Free; Cabañeros 4x4 guided routes are paid (check current prices with the park).
Field-recording notes
Most of the dehesa is private hunting land ('fincas'): the general hunting season opens in October and stag hunting ('monterías') starts as the rut fades — rifle shots at dawn are normal outside the national parks. Monfragüe's roads are open, but leaving the tracks is prohibited. No calling devices. Nights are still warm and insect-loud in September; the roars sit well above it.
