When is the best time?

Peak: 15 Sep – 30 Sep. 15–30 September

Active from 10 Sep to 20 Oct (September to October) in a typical year.

Time of day

Roaring peaks in the 2 h after sunrise, when fog and cold air carry it for kilometres, and again from about 90 min before sunset into the first hours of darkness.

What will you hear?

Roars bouncing off limestone walls in high beech and oak valleys — a longer, harder reverb than the southern dehesa — with wolves occasionally answering and cowbells far below.

Binoculars?

Binoculars helpful. Roars carry for kilometres in the fog; binoculars pick out stags on the far slopes from the listening points.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Riaño: pick up the free map of car-accessible listening points at the Casa del Parque in Lario or Puebla de Lillo; the mountain roads (N-625, LE-333) are open at all hours. Valdeón: park in Posada de Valdeón or at the Cares gorge trailhead at Caín. Saja-Besaya: lay-bys on the CA-280 through the reserve. Ask which valleys are being hunted that week.

Cost: Free.

Field-recording notes

Fog and cold air at dawn carry the sound for kilometres. Riaño and Saja are hunting reserves: stag stalking runs through the rut on set days — ask the Casa del Parque which valleys are shooting. Cattle are everywhere; bells are part of the Cantabrian soundscape whether you like it or not.
