When is the best time?
- Peak 1: 15 Jun – 31 Aug — Mid June to August: harbour seal pups on the banks
- Peak 2: 20 Nov – 15 Jan — Late November to mid January: grey seal pups on the Wadden Sea banks (Helgoland births November–January)
Active from 1 Jan to 31 Dec (all year) in a typical year.
Time of day
Wadden haul-outs are exposed for about 2 h either side of low water (guided walks are timed to it); the Hvide Sande sluice has seals at any hour, quietest early morning.
- Morning (haul-outs tide-timed): sunrise → 3 h after sunrise
Depends on the tide: best around low tide. Check local tide tables.
What will you hear?
Harbour seals are quiet — snorts, splashes, pups bleating on a haul-out; grey seal bulls moaning and roaring in winter; with a hydrophone, seal vocalisations and the tide; oystercatchers and the surf.
Binoculars?
Binoculars helpful. Seals within 10 m at the Hvide Sande sluice; binoculars for the Wadden haul-outs at the 300 m rule.

How to go on your own, and what it costs
Hvide Sande: stand on the public quays by the sluice or on the fjord side near the surf-school beach — free, any hour. Wadden banks: 300 m rule, no walking to haul-outs outside guided walks (Vadehavscentret and the local guided seal walks from Fanø and Rømø). Grenen: the roped-off tip.
Cost: Free at Hvide Sande and Grenen; Vadehavscentret own-car seal safari DKK 250 adult (2026); tractor-bus safaris (check current prices).
Who runs access
- Vadehavscentret – seal and Wadden Sea walks (park authority) — Guided low-tide seal walks from the national park centre at Vester Vedsted.
Field-recording notes
Seals at the Hvide Sande sluice are within 10 m and used to people — the harbour is also fishing boats, the sluice gates (a huge water sound when they open) and the surf-school crowd; a hydrophone dropped from the quay picks up seal calls and the sluice flow. On the Wadden banks the national park rule is 300 m from haul-outs and no approach on foot outside guided walks; pups in June–July are easily separated from mothers by disturbance. Grey seal pupping (Dec–Feb) is on remote banks reached only by boat.
