When is the best time?

Peak: 1 Nov – 15 Feb. November to mid February, the wintering season of the Palearctic terns

Active from 1 Oct to 31 Mar (October to March) in a typical year.

Time of day

Pirogue from the first light until about 09:00 before the wind and the tourist boats; tern and heron roosts on the acadja fish-parks and the mangrove islets from an hour before sunset

What will you hear?

Black terns and whiskered terns calling over the fish-parks, egrets and herons settling at dusk, jacanas on the lily beds and the paddle-and-pole sounds of a stilt town of 30,000 people.

Binoculars?

Binoculars helpful. Terns hawk over the fish-parks beside the pirogue; binoculars for the roost islets, which are kept at a distance.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Hire a pirogue at the Abomey-Calavi embarcadère (public; agree the price before leaving) and ask for the fish-parks north of Ganvié at first light; no guide or permit needed, but the roost islets are community-protected, so keep off them.

Cost: Pirogue hire per trip, negotiable; the Ganvié tourist boat has a fixed tariff; check current prices.

Free or no-guide alternative: The lagoon shore at Abomey-Calavi and the Cotonou lagoon bridges give terns and herons for free, without a boat.

Field-recording notes

Ramsar site (Basse vallée de l'Ouémé, lagune de Porto-Novo, lac Nokoué) surrounded by a city: outboard traffic, Cotonou's generators and the road bridge. The mangrove islets and the northern fish-parks at first light are the quiet corner. Roost islets are community-protected; approach with the guide only. The ecotourism office in Ganvié arranges early pirogues.
