When is the best time?

Active from 10 Apr to 15 Aug (April to August) in a typical year.

Time of day

Under the midnight sun the colony wheels most in the evening from about 19:00 to 01:00, and the wind often drops around midnight; storm petrels only once it gets dark again (late July–August, 23:00–02:00).

What will you hear?

The wing-roar and growling of a puffin colony wheeling over the slope, kittiwakes, eagles; on Røst, Leach's and storm petrels at night; the Atlantic.

Binoculars?

Binoculars helpful. The colony wheels overhead on the Lundura slope; binoculars for birds on the ledges and the Røst islets from the boat.

Where to go

How to go on your own, and what it costs

Lovund: ferry/express boat from Sandnessjøen or Stokkvågen, then walk from the village to the foot of the Lundura slope (paths only). Røst: Hurtigruten/ferry from Bodø, boat trips to the islets from Røst. Værøy: ferry from Bodø/Moskenes, steep trails to Måstadfjellet. Bleiksøya: boat from Bleik.

Cost: Free on foot; ferries and island boat trips (check current prices).

Field-recording notes

Røst's puffins have suffered decades of breeding failure (herring collapse) and the colony can be silent by July in a bad year — ask the Røst bird station. Colonies on Lovund and Værøy are on steep slopes above villages: stay on paths, no burrow-side sitting. Wind is relentless; the lee of the island at midnight often gives 30 minutes of calm. Storm petrels on Røst are a night-time, dark-period species (late July–August when the sun sets again). Ferries are the only traffic.
