Fouta Djallon — savanna chimpanzees and the Bafing highlands

When is the best time?
Peak: 1 Dec – 31 Mar. December to March (dry season); the waterfalls are loudest at the end of the rains (September–October)
Active from 1 Nov to 31 May (November to May) in a typical year.
Time of day
Chimpanzee pant-hoots at dawn and at nesting time before dark; baboons and hippos on the Bafing river at dusk; the plateau's nights are cold and very quiet
- Dawn: 30 min before sunrise → 2 h after sunrise
- Dusk: 90 min before sunset → 1 h after last light
What will you hear?
Chimp calls echoing off sandstone canyon walls in a savanna-woodland mosaic, baboon troops on the cliffs, hippos on the Bafing, and canyons full of waterfall noise after the rains — with the Fulani villages' cattle and calls to prayer.
Binoculars?
Binoculars essential. Chimps and baboons are on canyon walls hundreds of metres off; binoculars needed, a scope for vultures on the cliffs.
Where to go
- Doucki village (canyon hikes) — The one established independent-traveller base on the plateau, near Pita; village-guided canyon walks where chimps are regularly heard. Map
- Dalaba – Chutes de Ditinn and the Fouta escarpment — Highland town at 1,200 m; cliffs with vultures, waterfalls, cold nights. Map
- Moyen-Bafing National Park (Tougué / Dinguiraye side) — Created 2021 with the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation; no tourism infrastructure yet — research access via the park and WCF. Coordinates approximate. Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Bush taxi to Pita or Dalaba; at Doucki a local guide (the village's own) takes you into the canyons for a daily fee, and the plateau roads and viewpoints are free to walk. Moyen-Bafing NP: no public access yet.
Cost: Doucki village guide and lodging a few tens of euros per day (check current prices); plateau viewpoints free.
Free or no-guide alternative: The Fouta Djallon's public tracks and escarpment edges around Dalaba and Pita — including the Ditinn and Kambadaga falls — are free; dawn chimp calls are heard from the canyon rims near Doucki without a guide.
Who runs access
- Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (Moyen-Bafing NP partner) (NGO) — Research and conservation; contact for park status.
Field-recording notes
The plateau is the quietest landscape in Guinea: no traffic at night, thin air, dry-season temperatures near 5°C at dawn. Harmattan dust in January. The chimps are unhabituated; you record them as a distance event and do not follow. Moyen-Bafing is not open to visitors as of 2026 — the WCF and the park run it for research; the Doucki canyons are the practical alternative.
