When is the best time?
Peak: 15 Jun – 15 Aug. Mid June to mid August (nursery colonies; emergence 20–40 min after sunset)
Active from 15 May to 15 Sep (May to September) in a typical year.
Time of day
Emergence starts about 20 min after sunset (21:00–21:30 in June, after the tourist sites close) and runs for about an hour.
- Emergence: 20 min after sunset → 90 min after sunset
What will you hear?
Audible squeaks and wing rustle at cave mouths from Miniopterus colonies of thousands; with a bat detector, horseshoe-bat constant-frequency calls at 80–110 kHz and bent-winged FM sweeps.
Binoculars?
No binoculars needed. Bats stream out at arm's length at dusk; a bat detector matters, binoculars do not.
Where to go
- Škocjan Caves collapse dolines (Velika and Mala dolina) — Bats emerge into the dolines; the park runs summer evening programmes. Regional park rules apply. Map
- Predjama cave and castle — Large Miniopterus colony under the castle; emergence over the car park. Tourist site — stay until the crowds leave. Map
- Postojna cave surroundings / Pivka basin — Numerous smaller caves in the Pivka intermittent lakes area; ask the Slovenian bat society (SDPVN). Map
How to go on your own, and what it costs
Record outside: the Predjama car park after the castle closes (emergence 21:00–21:30 in June), the rims of the Škocjan collapse dolines from the public path (the park runs summer evening programmes, ticketed), Pivka valley cave mouths with SDPVN advice. Never enter caves in the nursery season.
Cost: Free outside; Škocjan Caves standard tour €16–24 adult by month (2026); summer evening programmes (check current prices).
Who runs access
- Park Škocjanske jame – summer evening programmes (park authority) — Guided evening events in the collapse dolines in summer.
Field-recording notes
All bats and their roosts are protected in Slovenia; entering non-show caves in the nursery season is illegal without a permit from the environment agency (ARSO) and pointless anyway — record outside. Use a full-spectrum recorder at 384 kHz+ at the cave lip and a normal stereo pair for the audible rustle. Predjama and Škocjan have tourist noise until about 20:00 in summer; emergence at 21:00–21:30 in June is after closing. No lights on the exit stream of bats.
