Singing With Nightingales

How a woodland encounter for 40 became a touring performance for thousands

The challenge

Mercury prize-nominated folk artist and environmental advocate Sam Lee brought Sounding Wild into the development of a touring version of Singing With Nightingales, his celebrated after-dark experience taking audiences into the woods to hear and sing with these remarkable migratory birds. .

The Solution

Sounding Wild adapted the site-specific experience into a touring audio drama engineered for the full dynamic range of live performance, from the immersive sound systems of world-class concert halls to the outdoor stages of international music festivals. All without losing the program’s signature improvisational capacity.

Sam gained the ability to attune his storytelling to any audience or environment with a scored soundscape of folk song, oral history, and the living voice of nightingales we recorded following the migratory flyway from Europe to West Africa.

Above all, we preserved the profound intimacy of hearing the nightingale for the first time in a Sussex woodland, whether performing for 40 people under the stars or 4,000 people at Glastonbury.

The results

  • Performed live for over 6,500 people

  • 150k+ social views

  • Performed at Glastonbury, Shambala, EartH Hackney, and Future of Sound

  • Covered by The Guardian, BBC Radio, Emergence Magazine, Financial Review
